OUTDOOR
INTERPRETIVE STRUCTURES
The development
of outdoor interpretive structures is a response to the needs
of site managers to provide on-site interpretation that engages
visitors, is truly interpretive and is in keeping with the landscape.
At present, most
site managers opt for interpretive panels as the primary means
of providing on-site interpretation. Some also employ public art,
most commonly in the form of sculpture, as an alternative form
of provision.
Outdoor interpretive
structures take the best elements of panels and public art,
but also step beyond these paradigms, to create new kinds of
interpretive installations in the landscape.
Clarity worked
with an environmental artist to produce the 'gateway' structure
pictured here, for a new community woodland. Local people attended
workshops to produce some of the carvings.
